Facebook Page

I created a Facebook page for my solo songs. Now I wish I had thought of a band name before releasing the songs.

I actually thought of something seemingly clever such as Timetanic or Antitachyon Project, something that would have sounded both extremely geeky and extremely stupid five minutes after releasing the songs.

I’ll end this post with a small anecdote. Some of you remember our third album, Chaotic Beauty, and the first song on it, Shattered Soul. The first verse was something like this:

And the ancient mystic words misled me, they reached my hidden innocence
So the sweetest moments of the perfect beauty turned to the hours of the deepest despair

Yeah. Perfect beauty indeed :D. Here’s the origin of those two little words.

2017?

There have been some inquiries about my little solo project and EToS. To be more exact, some people have wanted to know if EToS or myself are going to release new songs this year.

The answer is no. Or “most likely no”. Or “there could be something”.

As you may know, Eternal Tears of Sorrow has been writing songs for the eight album for months now. However, writing songs is much slower nowadays than it used to be when we were younger. Besides, we’ve been taking care of some other time-consuming things, too. Still, it is possible that you are able to hear a new song or two this year… Some way ;).

On my side project, I will write more songs when the time is right. When I feel like it, that is. It’s not all about the music, you know. It’s about the story, too. And the story consists of the lyrics and the music videos.

There are many questions. Is the end of the world really coming or is it just someone who thinks that way? Why is somebody (or some people) thinking of travelling in time? Or has someone (or some people) already travelled in time, to the past or to the future? Who are those weird people who have gathered in the dark to watch old black and white movies? Are they slaves or leaders or just regular people? When and where do they live?

And so on. I need to find answers to these questions before going on.

But anyway, 2017’s going to be an interesting year, no matter what.

Lyrics for End of the World and Blink

Here are the so-called lyrics for the two songs. The samples are from different movies and tv shows.

END OF THE WORLD

(Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)
Judging by the pollution content of the atmosphere, I believe we have arrived at the late twentieth century.

(V, V for Vendetta)
This world — the world that I am a part of and that I helped shape — ends tonight.
And tomorrow, a different world will begin that different people will shape. This choice belongs to them.”

(Frank Anderson, Donnie Darko)
Wake up… Come closer… They are in great danger

(Hunter, Crimson Tide)
“The purpose of war is to serve a political end but the true nature of war is to serve itself.”

(The Frenchman, Millennium)
“You know the end is coming! The thousand years is over!”

(Frank Anderson, Donnie Darko)
28 days 6 hours 42 minutes 12 seconds.

(William Somerset, Se7en)
Ernest Hemingway once wrote, ‘The world is a fine place and worth fighting for.’ I agree with the second part.”

(Frank Anderson, Donnie Darko)
28 days 6 hours 42 minutes 12 seconds.

BLINK

(Kenny O’Donnell, Thirteen Days)
“If the sun comes up tomorrow, it is only because of men of good will. That is all there is between us and the devil.”

(The Doctor, Doctor Who)
The angels are coming. They are fast, faster than you could believe.”

(Samuel, The Ghost & The Darkness)
“The ghost and the darkness… Have come.”

(Seth, From Dusk to Dawn)
And if there is a hell — then there has got to be a heaven…”

(Heather Donahue, The Blair Witch Project)
I am so so sorry for everything that has happened. — It’s all because of me that we’re here now – hungry, cold, and hunted.”

(James Cole, Twelve Monkeys)
“How can I save you? It already happened! Almost the whole population. Of the world! Only about one percent survived. I can’t save you, nobody can!”

(Amy Pond, Doctor Who)
“Time can be rewritten!”

(Kenny O’Donnell, Thirteen Days)
“If the sun comes up tomorrow, it is only because of men of good will. That is all there is between us and the devil.”

(The Doctor, Doctor Who)
Good luck!

Music Videos!

You know, if you release something, why not release them properly. Here are the music videos for the new songs I released earlier this week.

Something New…

When writing songs, trying new things has always been one of the most important things for me. That’s how many of my share of the EToS songs have started. Sometimes I’ve intentionally started something very different from the style of EToS and still ended up having a song that sounds like EToS.

This is how these two songs got started. I just wanted to try something new. The outcome doesn’t sounds like EToS at all. But they do remind me of Kevin Moore and his Chroma Key band that influenced me when writing songs for Chaotic Beauty.

So, they’re just experiments in finding new approaches to the songwriting process. They are actually a bit old. 2011 or 2012, perhaps. But I decided to release them anyway.

The funny thing is that this week, I started thinking of writing a new song, a sequel to these two songs and once again, it is becoming another EToS song. It won’t sound like these songs. It will sound like EToS.

Anyway, these songs should be available in most digital streaming sites right now (including iTunes and Amazon):

What Is Eternal Tears of Sorrow Up to?

Eternal Tears of Sorrow has been around for ages. 21½ years is quite a long time for a band, is it? Basically, our career ran be divided into three distinct eras.

  1. 1994-1999: our two first albums, melodic death metal and doom/death metal.
  2. 1999-2001: two albums: melodic death metal + something else?
  3. 2004-2013: three albums with more symphonic elements.

You could say our fourth era has just began after a 28-month break.

This time, the new era doesn’t mean new members, though. It means changing our attitude. It means trying to write songs in a different way. We want our music to be rawer but more melodic, simpler but catchier, more melancholic but heavier. And so on. The hardcore punk attitude without actually playing hardcore punk but our kind of metal.

I think we know what to do now. It will take a lot of time, though, so don’t expect out eighth album to come out next year. If we were twenty-five again, we could write and record an album in six months. But that was fifteen (!) years ago and things have changed since then. There will be no deadlines or obligations.

The journey is just about to start.

P.S. Meliora by Ghost may be the album of the year. It doesn’t mean we’re going to sound like Ghost. Or look like them!

Täältä pohjoiseen – Sentencedin tarina

A book review. Matti Riekki: “Täältä pohjoiseen – Sentencedin tarina” i.e. “North from Here – the Story of Sentenced”

Bändi oli toki yksi monista musiikillisista innoittajista; ainakin North From Here -albumi ja The Trooper -EP vaikuttivat musiikkimme.

Me, kolme nuorta miestä kaukaa Pudasjärveltä, olimme tulleet studioon nauhoittamaan ensimmäistä studiodemoa ja heti törmäsimme “ison maailman tapoihin”.

Sentenced onnistui kahdessa asiassa.

Palatakseni kirjaan… Marras oli puolifiktiivinen kertomus fiktiivisen bändin yhdestä kiertueesta kun taas Täältä pohjoiseen tiivistää bändin historian alusta loppuun. Kirja on bändin näköinen.

Suosittelen.
